Indie beauty conversation with More Hair Naturally
3 Feb 2022 --- Hair loss brand More Hair Naturally strives to provide an innovative and sought-after hair thinning solution. We caught up with CEO Mahryah Shain to find out all about the brand’s philosophy, its proudest moment to date and its plans to “change the thinning hair industry”.
What was your inspiration behind launching More Hair Naturally?
We were looking to create an all-natural solution to thinning hair that was stronger and more powerful than anything else on the market. We released our flagship product, More Hair Naturally 9 back in 2016.
What was missing from the mainstream market that you sought to fill with More Hair Naturally?
What was happening was that the majority of products for hair loss were all drug-based products, which have potential side effects and not the best success rate.
All the popular drug products are based on discoveries that were made in the 1970s. Sure, there were some natural products available on the market but none of them were really strong enough to produce results that exceeded the drug products. That was our goal; we feel that no one should ever have to sacrifice their health to have great hair and strong confidence.
How did you get the idea for your hair care solution?
More Hair Naturally has been in the thinning hair industry for over 25 years and we were always successful in helping people achieve results. However, we are always striving to do better.
We were discovering that with our older products, people were getting results but they weren't getting them fast enough, and so we asked “how do we speed up the results and make them stronger and better?”.
Now, this was back in 2012, so we started researching medical journals from around the world to see what advances were being made in the science of thinning hair. Most of the technology that was being used in all the over-the-counter and prescription products was developed in the 1970s. Science never stops, after all; researchers never stop researching.
We started exploring this technology and in doing so we found that people were finding amazing results in lab studies using peptides, probiotics and various amino acids, as well as stem cells and other nutrient combinations that were not available in any product. When we saw this we got pretty excited because these were all natural, very aggressive results that we were looking for to bring to people.
What did the launch process involve from conceptualization through to commercialization?
The launch process consisted of asking “how do we get people to understand that this is a whole new approach to thinning hair?”. After all, it's really easy to see a thinning hair product and think that it is the same as all the other products on the market, but this is a whole new revolution in what is possible in the thinning hair industry.
The biggest challenge was getting people to shift their perspectives and raise their expectations of what is possible. There are a lot of products, suggestions and blogs out there that may suggest things like rubbing olive oil on your head or eating more of a certain food, and all that stuff is okay and can be helpful, but it's not going to produce the results that most people are looking to achieve.
Because of this, a lot of times when people hear “natural product” they think, “oh they just want me to rub orange peels on my head” or something similar. So we work really hard to get people to understand that this is really cutting-edge science that has never been done before. Conveying that is a big challenge.
Also, a lot of people have been taken advantage of by this industry and we are working hard to change that.
What are your short and long-term hopes and goals for More Hair Naturally?
Our goal for More Hair Naturally is to change the thinning hair industry. We want people to know that if they don't want to use a drug to achieve a result they're looking for then they don't have to; there are other options.
We don't want people to feel dependent on something for the rest of their life that may or may not affect their health. We want people to know that there are other routes they can take to achieve the same goal.
This plays out on a larger lever as well, because a lot of people feel there's only one option to solve a problem they are facing in their life. Yet there is never just one solution; there are always multiple solutions. We want to change the way people look at the solutions and options they have to solve problems.
What are you proudest of to date?
Thinning hair is very emotional. We have people every day who call in crying, in tears. One of the most important qualities of anyone who works here is empathy; we demand that of anyone who is connected to this company.
They have innately a large capacity for empathy because people call in and are devastated by what's happening to their hair and their self-esteem and their life, especially now in this time when a lot is going on in the world. It's really tough for a lot of people.
So in terms of my proudest moment, it's when those people call in and then they send us an email or a photo a few months later and they're smiling and they're happy and they're getting the results that they were looking for. A lot of times they say “it's the first time in my life I've felt like there was hope”. That's really why we do it - it’s for that moment.
How would you like to be known by your consumers?
I'd like More Hair Naturally to be known by customers as a company that really cares, that really wants them to succeed and to do well. We have a full team of customer support staff here and we call our clients from time to time just to check-in and make sure they're doing alright. We want to make sure they're getting the results that they were hoping to get. If they are, that's awesome and we celebrate with them and we cheer with them.
If they're not, we troubleshoot and try to figure out what's going on and how we can help. We look at how we can adjust and what we can do to help them get the results that they want and the results that we know are possible.
It's really important to us that everyone who uses our product wins and achieves the goals they want to achieve. That's not saying we have 100% results, I wish we did, but no product does. If there's a customer who has a concern, we call them, we get on the phone and we do everything in our power to make sure they get what they're looking for because that's why we're here, that's what's important to us. It matters to us that our customers succeed, not just with their hair but in their life and their goals.
